Bataan
Is a province of the Philippines occupying the whole of Baatan Peninsula of Luzon Island, The province is part of Region three or Central Luzon. The capital town is Balanga City and is near the boundary of Zambales and Pampanga to the north. It faces the South China Sea to the west and Subic Bay to the north-west and encloses Manila Bay to east side.
The Bataan Peninsula is a rocky extension of the Zambales Mountains, of Luzon. It separates the Manila Bay from the South China Sea. The peninsula feature Mount Natib 1.253 meters in the north and the Mariveles Mountains in the south, which includes Mount Samat, the Mariveles, at the southern tip, can be reached through jet ferry plying the Mariveles-to-Manila route that has an approximate travel time of 40 minutes.
The Famous Battle of Bataan: Bataan featured prominently during World War II. Prior to the 1941 Japanese invasion, the US Army stored nearly 1.000.000 US gallons of gasoline here.
Mount Samat
Is a mountain in the town of Pilar, Bataan, Philippines that is the site of the Dambana ng Kagitingan or “Shrine of Valor” with the highest point of 564 m above sea level.
Along with the island fortress of Corregidor, Mount Samat was the site of the most vicious battle against the Japanese Imperial Army in 1942 during the famous Battle of Bataan.
After the fierce battle lasting three days, 78,000 exhausted, sick and starving men under Major General Edward P King surrendered to the Japanese for sec on April 9, 1942. It was, and still is, the single largest surrender of U.S. Were then led on the Bataan Death March.
How to Get there?
From Manila, take the NLEX and exit at San Fernando, Pampanga. From San Fernando, head southwest ward about 34 km all the way to Layak junction that leads to Olongapo City, At the junction, heat straight. About half of a kilometer from the Layac junction the road will veer left and will head southward. Just follow the road southward. A short distance from the point where the road veers southward, there will be a junction, just follow the road to the right. This will takes you through the main highway that bypasses the towns of Orani, Abucay and Balanga, Bataan. After about 24km on this main highway, you will see a clearly marked junction that points to MT. Samat on the right. Turn right, then about 4.5km towards Mr. Samat there will be a junction on the left that leads to the Shrine. This access road is about 6.5km winding uphill. Or instead do not exit at San Fernando and keep straight until you reach the SCTEX exit. Until you reach the Dinalupihan exit. Right turn and straight ahead until you reach the junction.
